It’s no secret that home renovations can be disruptive. The noise, presence of strangers in the home, and temporarily losing access to areas in the home can be hard for the whole familyto adjust to. Unfortunately, this is particularly difficult if your family includes small children. Here are some ways to keep them safe and happy throughout the duration of your renovation.

Set Boundaries

Of course, above all else, your number one goal is to ensure that the children in your home stay safe. This means setting ground rules and letting them know that certain rooms may be off limits during the renovation. This is because the space may be unsafe for untrained building professionals, or there may also be some materials or tools left on site when workers are away.

Keep Them Busy

Home renovations provide an excellent opportunity for you and your littles to get out and explore! Enjoy tons of time at the park, explore the city, or take advantage of community centre play programs. If you can’t always get out of the house, set up some fun stations away from the work area. This might mean extra time playing in the backyard, or camping out in the master bedroom with movies, games, and snacks.

Call in the Grandparents

Completely removing small children from a home under renovation is often the best tactic for all parties involved. If you can, try to see if they can stay with grandparents or other trusted relatives for a week, a weekend, or even a day here and there. This will keep them safe, entertained, and also provides fun bonding opportunities that their grandparents are sure to cherish.

Eat Out Often

This is especially vital when your kitchen is being renovated. Yes, you can set up a temporary kitchen area with a hot plate, cooler, or microwave. However, let’s be real, this is bound to make your kids miserable after the first night. Instead, set aside some of your renovation budget for meals out while the renovation is under way.
